A colourful sofa is a fantastic way to add vibrancy and personality to any room.

With so many shades to choose from, I've created this guide to assist you in your decision making to help you along the way. I'll let you know the pros and cons of adding a colourful piece of furniture into your home as well as my top tips on how to style it. Finally, discover my favourite colourful sofas.

The pros and cons of choosing a colourful sofa

Before you invest in your sofa, you should consider the advantages and disadvantages of adding a bold sofa to your living space:

The pros of choosing a colourful couch

Vibrant sofas can:

  • Add personality to any room
  • Instantly brighten spaces
  • Give your room an interesting focal point
  • Reduce the need to have colour everywhere
  • Help create more of an uplifting and positive vibe

The cons of choosing a colourful couch

Vibrant sofas can:

  • Clash with your existing décor, meaning you may need to redecorate
  • Be too overpowering
  • Require that little bit more thought when you’re sofa shopping
  • Be your cup of tea and not everybody else’s (but does it matter, as long as you love it!)
  • Be more prone to fading in direct sunlight

How to select the right colourful sofa for your space

Whether it’s going to take pride of place in your living room, sit prettily in a dressing room or be used as extra seating in an open plan living kitchen area, time and research is key to finding the best colourful couch for your home.

One of the first things you should consider when choosing the colour of your new couch is whether it will blend into your interior design.

I think its super important to think about your existing décor and what colour will complement the scheme. You may want to choose something that matches it perfectly or choose a contrasting colour.

Shades from opposite ends of the colour wheel generally complement each other beautifully, such as a deep green sofa against a blush pink backdrop.

If you prefer a more neutral colour scheme, such as white or cream, your bold sofa can be used to add a pop of colour to the room and a dramatic focal point.

You will also need to think about where the sofa is going to sit and who’s going to be using it.

If your sofa is going to be used as the family sofa in the main part of the house, you may want to consider a slightly darker shade as this will be more forgiving when it comes to accidental marks. For example, blemishes on a red sofa may show up more than on a bottle green sofa or purple sofa.

Also, think about where you’re planning on putting your statement piece. If it’s one that’s just for you in your bedroom, you may be able to be a little bolder in your choice and won’t have to worry about little ones or pets being on it!

How do I style a colourful sofa?

If your sofa needs a little extra decoration, I'd recommend to adorn your sofa with some scatter cushions.

Scatter cushions are great as they instantly add more depth to your sofa; they come in all sorts of shapes, colours and sizes and can be easily swapped when you fancy a change.

Adorning your sofa in cushions that contrast in colours can create an interesting clash. If you prefer something more streamlined, opt for matching cushions in the same colour or tones of your sofa. You could even have a pick and mix of different colours, patterns and textures to create an eye-catching, eclectic look.

A stylish throw is also a great way to add even more colour to your sofa. I recommend draping or folding it over the arm or the back of the sofa, or place it covering the seat cushions - this is also a great way to preserve the seat covers!

A chunky knitted throw will evoke a relaxed, cosy feel to your space or add a little luxury with a soft chenille or velvet throw.
