A warming and versatile shade, it’s easy to see why the colour brown is having a comeback. Whether it’s a brown leather armchair, brown accent chair or fabric dining chair, the earthy hue is once again a popular choice for fixtures and furniture in many homes.

In this article, I’ll take you through the fundamentals of brown chairs; from colour schemes to styling, as well as my personal pick of the best brown chairs. Keep reading for all the insight you need!

What colours go with a brown chair?

As an incredibly versatile shade, you’ll be pleased to know that brown chairs go with lots of different colours, giving you even more of a reason to invest in that chocolate brown chair, brown recliner chair or set of dark brown dining chairs you’ve had your eye on!

Here are some of the best shades to complement brown furniture:

Cream & white

Any shade of brown looks great alongside cream and white. Because brown, be it light or dark brown, is a naturally deep and rich colour, so surrounding it with something as fresh as white or cream really makes the brown pop without competing with it.

Orange & red

For something brilliantly bold, orange and reds match beautifully with brown. . Brown has an undertone of copper to it, so when you position it against orange or red, it naturally blends right in.

Having a brown chair with splashes of burnt orange or deep burgundy around it, through the use of cushions, curtains, throws and rugs) (you could even go as bright as pillar box red) will provide a lovely, warm and inviting end result that isn’t too vibrant and in-your-face.

Beige

It makes sense for beige and brown to go together because sandy beige contains red undertones that naturally work in harmony with brown. Beige is the ideal option if you want a neutral shade, but feel that white is too clinical or cream is too bland. Beige gives you the best of both worlds – neutral, with a great contrast for a bit of interest.

Grey

As another neutral, grey and brown work wonderfully together to create a sophisticated palette. Whilst grey offers a contemporary, cool tone, brown’s hues offer a warm contrast, giving you a colour scheme that evokes a calming and welcoming environment.

Green

It seems only sensible that brown should go so well with another earth colour. An amazingly versatile shade, any one of green’s plethora of hues will lend itself well to brown, blending beautifully to create a nature-inspired scheme and unrivalled colour combination.

How do you style a brown leather chair?

With such a fantastic array of colour combinations to choose from, styling your brown chair should be a relatively simple task.

Through the use of soft furnishings and accessories, such as throws and cushions, you can give your chair an added layer of interest and texture easily. It’s important to flag here that you need to be mindful about not overloading your chair. It may be that you only have space for one statement cushion or a thinner throw that isn’t going to swamp your chair. A small splash of a contrasting shade may be all you need to give your brown chair a new look.

Does grey go with brown furniture?

It really does. As a pair of neutrals, they’re like two peas in a pod. Both are neutral, so work hand-in-hand with each other. However, it’s probably best you make sure one’s light and one’s dark because dark grey and dark brown can look too gloomy, while light grey and light brown can look a little lacklustre. Light versus brown always works well.
